The Royal Society

The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge was incorporated in 1662. Samuel Pepys and Isaac Newton were among its early presidents, and latter presidents have included individuals we have already mentioned such as Lord Rayleigh, William Crookes, and Joseph John Thomson.

The Royal Society has served as the prototype of the societies that continue to play a major role in the scientific process in many countries. These societies sponsor conferences, provide industry and government with a source of independent expert consultation, and most important, publish the carefully refereed and edited journals in which scientific knowledge is primarily disseminated to the scientific community and archived for posterity.
